In an effort to combat the negative connotations of the ‘grille’, the Gran Coupe has ditched its massive grille for a more subtle design with round headlights.
The new S8 has a new front grille—one that’s less divisive than the giant grille that was on the S7. However, it has also been said to be much larger than the S7’s, which I didn’t think was possible. The difference between the S8’s grille and the S7’s is that the S8’s grille has been modified, and as you can see, the S8’s grille has been cut down from the S7’s really large one.
When the first generation Gran Coupe debuted in the U.S. back in 1992, it was the only car on the market with an available Gran Turismo option. Now the company is building on that legacy with the all-new 2018 Gran Coupe with an available Gran Turismo Edition, featuring a blacked-out grille, a black engine cover, a body-color front splitter, and a distinctive wheel design.
Car designers can be stubborn. They should. If they develop something that doesn’t catch on or doesn’t become popular, they have to live with that forever. It never goes away. This is one reason why the truly unfortunate decision to make the kidney grilles of some BMWs so large persists. It’s like the old saying: We do for you what we want, not what you want.
This was BMW’s stance on its special grilles. Until now. Enthusiastic members of the BimmerToday forum have noticed a decline in BMW. On the new 4 Series Gran Coupe, it’s a gesture that softens the huge grille.
The grille of the BMW Gran Coupe is not very big, but it’s a welcome change

It’s not a big change, but it’s a start. And the realization that BMW had to do something to reduce the oversized nose of the 4 Series. Benny from BimmerToday found the two front ends of the 4 Series Gran Coupe and the Standard Coupe. Both have the same sheet metal for the windshield.
The lack of fog lights on the Gran Coupe simplifies the front end. The eye should not perceive so many elements. Interestingly, if you look closely, you can see that the Gran Coupe’s extreme underhood has been removed. The standard coupe has eye-catching relief elements.
But these are only minor changes. As you can see, the big change is a darkening of the color of the lower body around the holes of the red bean. By painting, you accentuate the bottom of the grid. Visually, the height of the grille is reduced, although nothing has actually changed.
Smart and essential paintwork makes the BMW’s grille look much better

No new tools were needed. It’s just a thoughtful and necessary change in paint detail that makes the front end much more attractive. This is a cheap and obvious trick, and we accept it. But now that BMW has bought time, some design and tooling changes need to be made to make the grille more attractive.
The idea that the customer is wrong and the designers are right is ridiculous. If something puts a buyer off, you lose the sale. This does not mean that the client is wrong. This makes the details or design look fake and puts off the potential buyer.
There are phases in the design process where you need to pause and go back to what you

Designers need to have a good enough filter to be able to look into the future and imagine to what extent certain projects will or will not be inclusive. That’s not always easy, which is why we have a design team. And from the time the idea is sketched to the time the project is signed, changes can be made.
Arrogance has no place in automotive design. BMW Design does not have to acknowledge its mistake or ask for a mea culpa. It just needs a revised front end to reflect the kind of attractive, sexy design that makes a BMW a BMW.
